Frequently asked questions
If your question is not here, write to overcome@optimusx.co.za and a person will answer.
Is Overcome medical treatment?
No. Overcome is a recovery-support and journalling tool. It does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition, it is not therapy, and it is not a substitute for professional care. It is also not a crisis service — nobody is watching your entries in real time. If you are in danger, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line.
Is it really free?
The free tier is permanent and needs no card. It keeps your counter, the daily check-in, your recovery score, the urge tool, starter techniques, the community and the crisis resources. Plus adds unlimited counters, the full technique and lesson library, the guided workbook, and your full history and patterns.
Who can see what I write?
You, by default. Your journal is not shown to a coach unless you switch journal sharing on yourself, and you can switch it off again. The community only ever shows the alias you choose — never your real name or email. We do not sell personal information and there is no advertising in Overcome.
Does my writing go to an AI company?
Yes, and we would rather say so plainly than bury it. Journal entries and companion messages are sent to Google’s Gemini API so a summary or a reply can be written. We use the paid API under terms that do not permit your content to train their models. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what is sent, when, and what is not. If you would rather none of it went anywhere, do not use the companion and keep journal sharing off.
Can I get my data out, or delete it?
Yes to both. Delete account, in Settings, removes your account and everything attached to it immediately and permanently — you confirm with your password, and there is no waiting period. For a copy of your data, or if you signed in with Google or Apple and so have no password to confirm with, write to overcome@optimusx.co.za from your account address and we will handle it within 30 days, usually much sooner.
What does a coach see?
Only the categories you agree to share, and only while you stay connected. There are seven separate switches — journal, mood, goals, habits, recovery score, AI summaries and progress reports — and each is yours to turn on and off. A coach can only ever reach clients assigned to them.
How do I cancel?
Settings, then Subscription, then cancel. No email, no phone call, no reason required, no cancellation fee. You keep access to the end of the period you have already paid for, and your data is untouched — cancelling and deleting are deliberately two different things.
What happens if a payment fails?
You are not locked out. The subscription is marked past due, the charge is retried over the following days, and your paid access continues for a further 3 days. If it still has not gone through, the account returns to the free tier — nothing you recorded is deleted, and everything comes back as soon as a payment succeeds.
Do I need a coach to use it?
No. Most people use Overcome entirely on their own. Connecting a coach is optional, it is your choice to start and your choice to end, and disconnecting takes effect immediately.
Which countries can use it?
Anyone can use Overcome. It is built and hosted by a South African company, prices are in Rand, and it is written to POPIA — with GDPR, UK GDPR and CCPA rights set out in the Privacy Policy for people those apply to. You must be 18 or older.
